Librarian – Children’s Department, full time, 37.5 hrs/week
Grafton-Midview Public Library, located in Lorain County has an opening we need to fill before the summer months!
Qualified candidates must have a background in education and children’s literature plus enjoy working with families to promote reading. We are looking for someone who is comfortable speaking with the public, has strong creative skills, computer literate, and familiar with Every Child Ready to Read. Candidates will assist children and parents in finding reading material and information, provide story time classes in-house and through outreach, plus market children services, programs.
MLIS desired, however candidate with bachelor’s degree working towards an MLIS may be considered. Must be available evenings and weekends. If you enjoy a bustling library atmosphere in a small town environment, Then Grafton-Midview Public Library is the place for you.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Children’s Librarian, Youth Services Department

Classification: Non-exempt

Salary Grade: Professional

Reports to: Youth Services Manager

Date: 2015

Summary: Performs a wide range of duties in the Children’s department working with babies to pre-teens; has a presence in the community connecting with schools and organizations. Tasks may include selecting, acquiring, cataloguing, classifying, circulating, and maintaining library materials, along with furnishing reference, bibliographical, and readers’ advisory services. Works with databases and information systems to access information.

Essential Functions:
• Plan, coordinate and implement services to children and families
• Assist in collection development of children materials in all formats; evaluate materials to determine outdated or unused items to be discarded
• Plan and conduct story time classes, school visits and other programs involving children including the annual Summer Reading Program
• Structure programs to incorporate skills from Every Child Ready to Read (1st & 2nd Editions) for children birth through preschool
• Analyze children’s and parents’ requests to determine needed information and /or materials; assist in furnishing or locating that information
• Instruct library patrons on basic computer skills, such as searching computerized databases and using library services and facilities
• Confer with community members and organizations to conduct informational programs, make collection decisions, and determine which library services to offer
• Promote/market children services and programs through print and social media, maintaining the Kid’s page and calendar on the Library’s website; assemble and arrange display materials
• Prepare reports on library activities (e.g. statistical reports, grant requests or progress reports, library budget, inventory)
• Review and evaluate literature on new publications in order to select and order print, audiovisual and electronic material
• Attend professional development activities related to position; participate in networking opportunities
• Develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with others, and maintain them over time
• Develop specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish your work
• Perpetuate a clean and inviting atmosphere within department
• Communicate with people outside the Library, representing the Library to customers, and other external sources
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:
• MLIS from an ALA accredited school
• Service oriented, actively looking for ways to help people; enjoys working with children, families and co-workers in a friendly non-competitive environment
• Thorough knowledge of children’s literature, library reference methods and procedures
• Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services, including patron needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer service
• Shows initiative, creativity, flexibility, resourcefulness and good judgment
• Excellent writing and communication skills with the ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand
• Computer literate, with a willingness to learn Google services, email software, Microsoft Office software and Library software
• Familiar with social media and the benefits of its use to the Library
• Ability and willingness to work a varied schedule including evenings and weekends;
• Must be able to perform physical activities that require use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as lifting, walking, stooping and handling of materials
• This job requires integrity, cooperation, dependability, flexibility and being open to change in the workplace
• A valid Ohio driver’s license for some travel
